The Field Recorders’ Collective is an excellent place to find and buy old time music. They feature recordings made from private collections, making hard to find music more accessible. Recordings of particular interest, released in 2008, include: Round Peak Volume 1 & 2, and Galax Gems: The Music of Galax in the 1960s.
Galax Fiddlers’ Convention
The Galax Fiddlers’ Convention, sponsored by the Galax Moose Lodge, is my favorite fiddlers’ convention to attend. The gates open early on the Sunday morning and people camp there the entire week. They have contests each night of the week, with an awards ceremony held late Saturday night. If you’ve never been to Galax, you should definitely go.
